Virtus Bologna escapes from Lega 2

It is not yet sure, but it is very probable that the win of La Fortezza Virtus Bologna, 89-78 on yesterday night over Premiata Montegranaro, will grant to this team the stay in the top Italian league. After a first Qtr ended behind (19-24), La Fortezza took the lead in the score and managed to keep a better 3pts shooting till the end of the game. New Virtus Captain Guilherme Giovannoni (202-F-80, agency: Interperformances) and Alan Anderson (198-G/F-82, college: Michigan St.) led their team in one of the most important games of the season, scoring 18 and 13 points, respectively, and four other players from Bologna ended the game in double digits. Premiata wasn' t able to shot better than 25% from behing the 3pts line, and had only 11 points from Jobey Thomas (193-G-80, college: Charlotte), while Sharrod Ford (206-F-82, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Clemson) had a night of 21 pts and 10 rebs and Kiwane Garris (188-G-74, agency: Priority Sports, college: Illinois) and Ricky Minard (194-G/F-82, college: Morehead St.) ended the game with 17 and 15 pts, respectively. This loss at Bologna could mean the definite fareewell to the second place for Montegranaro, in a season that remains fantastic.

Lega 2: the year of Ferrara.

On Friday night, Carife Ferrara defeated on the road Banco di Sardegna Sassari 91-73, enlarging to 3 wins the difference between its first place and all the other Lega 2 teams. With such an advantage and only seven games to play in regular season, it is very probable that Ferrara wil be directly promoted to Serie A. Scoring 21 points and dishing 5 assists on friday night, Andre Collins (183-G-82, college: Loyola, MD) showed to be back at his usual shape, and teh other top players of Carife, Harold Jamison (204-C-76, agency: Strategic Sports, college: Clemson) and Daniel Farabello (194-G-73), were very good they too, with 17 pts and 5 rebs and 14 pts and 4 assists, respectively. Trent Whiting (185-G-76, college: BYU) scored 26 points in losing effort for Sassari, but in our opinion this team can hope to enter in Serie A only via the playoff grid.

Serie A Week 26: 50 points (!) losing effort for Delonte Holland

The top news comes from the bottom of the table. Delonte Holland (201-F-82, college: De Paul) scored 50 points in Cimberio Varese loss against Milano: it's the 21st of the season. Holland shot 18/31 from the field and added 4 rebounds and 7 fouls drawn to close with a 46 rating. The last 50-points game in Italy was signed by Brian Evans (204-F-73, college: Indiana) in november 1999: 51 points for Lineltex Imola. Varese, however, trailed for the whole game and, as usual, had problems against Travis Watson (203-F/C-81, college: Virginia), that grabbed 16 rebounds. In the playoff race now Milano divide the sixth spot with Scavolini Pesaro, that outscored Scafati at home: with nine games to play, the struggle is open. In the most interesting game of the week, Air lost the third game in a row despite 20 points by Nikola Radulovic (207-F-73): Lottomatica Roma won in Avellino to remain second together with Premiata Montegranaro, that easily prevailed over Tisettanta Cantu. Bad times, on the contrary, for Bologna basketball: after a wonderful derby, Virtus and Fortitudo lost two different games. La Fortezza gave two points to the usual, impressive Montepaschi in Siena, while Upim let Biella score 104 points in a game lost by 7.

Jesi wins Lega 2 Cup

At the end of a very battled and tensed game, Fileni Bpa Jesi defeated Carife Ferrara 72-62 (after one OT) winning the Lega 2 Cup 2008. The home team was very effective in limiting Michele Maggioli (212-C-77) under the boards, and ended ahead the first half 38-30. Ferrara, however, wasn' t able to control the perimetral shooting of Anthony Maestranzi (178-G-84, college: N.Illinois) (178-G-84, college: N.Illinois) and the energy of David Moss (196-F-83, agency: SportsTalent, college: Indiana St.) (196-F-83, agency: SportsTalent, college: Indiana St.), and suffered the comeback of Jesi during the second half, till the 57-57 at the end of the regular time. Pointing on his veterans and on the scoring of Moss, Jesi cleary won the overtime 15-5, deserving the win. David Moss ended the game with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and is our MVP of the night. Anthony Maestranzi added 16 points and 2 assits, veteran Davide Cantarello (214-C-68) scored 9 points in pivotal moments of the game, while Michele Maggioli (212-C-77) ended the game with 6 pts and 11 rebs. Ferrara did not have the usual performning from Andre Collins (183-G-82, college: Loyola, MD), who ended the game with 9 points and only 3/20 from the court. The two best players in Ferrara were Harold Jamison (204-C-76, agency: Strategic Sports, college: Clemson), who scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebs and stealed 6 balls, and Marco Allegretti (204-F-81), who ended the game with 11 pts and 4 rbs.
